Well, they do not know what they are asking for. Given the maximum aperture of the LX3 lens (F2.0) this zoom range would compromise the quality of the image. Let us think about these compromises as a triangle, where one corner is luminosity of the lens, the second one is quality of the image and the third one is zoom range. You can choose two of them, the another one is restricted by your choice. Thus, Canon choose in the G10 for example, quality of the image and zoom range, thus maximum aperture was restricted to F2.8. While Panasonic in the Lumix LX3 choose quality of the image and luminosity of the lens (max aperture F2.0), thus zoom range was restricted to 24 - 60.
