to use a Ping-Pong ball as ball flash diffuser. I call it the" LX3 PONG" diffuser.
I am still in a prototype process but here is what I have done so far.
I am thinking of a attachment system that wont harm the flash mechanism.
Important note: In the case you are trying a similar manipulation on your LX3.
I am not responsible fore any malfunction or incident on your flash or any part
of your LX3. Always be very careful with your gear :) C.W

PONG DIFFUSER A (left) and PONG DIFFUSER B (right)

Note: These are the first 2 prototypes, I might came up with something new

PONG DIFFUSER A
Easy to attach and pretty stable, about 3,5 cm distance from the LX3 flash source.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
PONG DIFFUSER B
I still need to find a way to make it more stable, it is about 1,5 cm distance from the LX3 flash source. As it covers the whole flash it is actually bouncing light all around the place, real light ball.

RESULTS:

Note: iA, flash on

Note: iA, PONG A diffuser

Note: iA, PONG B diffuser

Conclusion: I think that the diffuser is pretty effective, it eliminates that little harsh flash effect that you get in the iA mode while using the flash. However on other images I noticed a little color cast produced but the ping pong ball's material. A little yellowish cast which is actually nice compared to the very white color you get without the flash. I guess from one Ping Pong ball to the other you might get different tones.

Update: I have been playing with a micro beauty dish concept but I need to revisit the design and element proportions. Right now the images samples are horrible.
I just found the idea of a beauty dish concept funny :)

ooh I have a LX3 too, and the ping pong ball diffuser is a great idea!! BRAVO!!
great idea. Now if only i can figure a way to hide the fact that it is a ping-pong ball so the subject doesn't break out into too much laughter.
Um....ping pong balls are hellishly inflammable, (see James Thurber on practical jokes- the blazing umbrella?)
