LX3 - LEATHER CASE (ALTERNATIVE)

I just discovered Italian leather case maker Luigi Crescenzi proposing a case for the LX3. As you can see on the images the real benefit is that you keep access to the back controls and LCD of the camera. Have a look at his site where he also offers a whole collection of oldschool leather cases for a lot of film and digital cameras at leicatime.com

The DMW-CLX3 is difficult to find. Some ebay sellers will send it to you straight from Japan. I was lucky enough to get it here in France trough a person who ordered 3 of them from Japan by mistake and resoled them for less. Less meaning less then the crazy 120 dollars you are currently paying for the case on ebay. Pretty expensive but pretty effective. Good protection, minimal space consuming and a nice leather feel.

After a few days of use I have one annoying aspects to point out. You have to unmount the case each time when you want to:

a - connect your camera to your computer
b - take the SD card out
c - recharge your battery

Basic manipulations require the unmount of the case. A turnaround to the connectivity issue would be to use one of these Eye-Fi SD cards that will transmit your images to your computer wirelessly. If I get in touch with one sometime soon I will test it with the LX3.

The DMW-CLX3 case is really nice and feels really like the dedicated case for the LX3. It's is too expensif to my taste but the design feels like the authentic cases of old film cameras and this really ads that little extra touch to the already amazing LX3.

The design of the case can be improved, to fit a more quick digital use. Maybe by keeping access to the USB and battery compartment, somehow. I will come up demonstrating video of the DMW-CLX3 case really soon.

LX3 - POCKET WIZARD

Just a quick shot to show you how a pocket wirard looks on a LX3.
A live performance will follow in the close future.
Until then enjoy the funny combination.

LX3'S COMPETITORS

A lot of new models came out this September 2008. All of them carry amazing new features and specs. Some companies are targeting a more large public with less expensive models then other , with more automatic modes and more or less special features. But at the end it really comes to 2 crucial specs. The lens's maximum aperture and the sensor's ISO reproduction. Both of them combined with a effective image stabilization and you already have the amazing recepie that explains the amazing camera generation.

So let's have an overview of all the high-end compact cameras of 2008 Fall's market:
(pls note that there are overlapping models that are out already or that are coming out soon. The compact camera market is very aggressive and active, new models are coming out all the time. Also I am not publishing any prices as theses are all changing constantly and are relative the your location. This is my personal selection of so said serious cameras but you also have Samsung's really nice wide angle cameras but will have more troubles with the ISO aspect).

MY LX3 PREDECESSORS

Before I go for the real stuff, let me show you my LX3's predecessors in the compact camera category.

2002-2003 Concord Eye (very first digital camera)
2003-2005 Fuji S5000 (bride alternative)
2005-2007 Samsung i5 (very compact, slick design)
2007-2008 Sanyo C6 (video and photo functions)

LX3 & D300

My choice in 2008, complimentary bodies, great potential.

LX3 - THE MOMENT OF CHOICE

So why did I choose the Lumix LX3? I listed specs ordered by importance that made me choose the Panasonic before any other competitors.

(Note: It is always hard to order the importance of specs or special features. Somehow it is the combination of all the specs I always wanted to have on a small camera that convinced me for the LX3. The size of the camera was also really important and disqualified the Canon in my case. The wide angle was also very important, as the image stabilization and the ISO performance of course. This camera just combined most of my requirements).

LX3 SILVER VS BLACK

Here are the 2 official colors of the LX3. SILVER and BLACK.
My personal preference will be the black. (was that predictable?)

The BLACK version has a more solid, slick and professional look but is made of the same material. The advantage of the silver version is that if you look well (a few store only will provide a price difference) you'll be ale to find the SILVER version for a little less then the BLACK one. If you are on a budget, the SILVER is for you then. Don't expect huge difference, but there is something around 30 dollars to save.
